ITOCHU Announces New Exhibition at ITOCHU AOYAMA ART SQUARE - "The Works of 10 Young Edokiriko Artisans"

September 6, 2016

ITOCHU Corporation (headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo; Masahiro Okafuji, President & CEO; hereinafter “ITOCHU”) opened ITOCHU AOYAMA ART SQUARE in the CI Plaza, a commercial facility situated next to ITOCHU’s Tokyo Head Office, in 2012. The gallery was part of ITOCHU’s social contribution activities, with the aim of developing the future generation through art, contributing to the local community, and promoting both local and international art and culture. Since then various exhibitions have been held at that space. ITOCHU looks forward to celebrating the fourth anniversary of the gallery on October 26, 2016.

The exhibition of the works of young Edokiriko artisans that ITOCHU will host this time is part of the popular exhibition that ITOCHU has held annually since 2013. This year the theme is Glass and Kiriko, which will be coordinated by Director Jun Michida.
How much can people absorb of the multifaceted charms of Kiriko and the brightness it releases to the surrounding space? In this exhibition, visitors will be offered an opportunity to appreciate Edokiriko’s faces that simultaneously feature as many different expressions as possible, including those that cannot ordinarily be observed without looking them from the behind, and those that support the works, not to mention those that are familiar.
There may be some faces that originally were not meant to be appreciated.
Nevertheless, we hope the charms of the Edokiriko that continue to attract people will be shared in their entirety and the new allure will be experienced through this opportunity.

As the exhibition enters its fourth year, 10 young artists will participate as creators of original work. Please take this opportunity to experience ten contemporary artists who have inherited tradition and aggressively continue to run with it, even as they reflect current trends in their excellent works.
