The goal of the Project is to develop the first sewerage treatment facility in Erbil, a city with a population of approximately 2 million people. The facility will prevent drinking water being contaminated by the underground infiltration of human waste and the deterioration of the quality of the water in public rivers due to sewer water flowing into the rivers, and it will also contribute to the improvement of the sanitary environment and the securing and effective use of water resources in the area.

The Project is financed by an Official Development Assistance (ODA) loan (contracted amount: 34.417 billion yen) provided through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under an agreement signed between JICA and the Government of the Republic of Iraq in June 2015, and construction of the Project is expected to be completed by 2028.

Under its management policy “The Brand-new Deal — Profit opportunities are shifting downstream —”, ITOCHU is moving forward with efforts to enhance its contributions to achieving the SDGs and its engagement with them through its business activities. The Environment Business, which is related to water and waste treatment, is one of ITOCHU's focus areas. In this business, ITOCHU is pushing forward with waste treatment projects in the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates (Emirate of Dubai), the Republic of Serbia, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia while simultaneously participating in seawater desalination projects in Australia and Oman. Going forward, ITOCHU will continue to actively promote its Environment Business and work to resolve social issues through the effective use of environmental resources, thereby contributing to the realization of a sustainable society.
