ITOCHU Holds Groundbreaking Ceremony for Ichihara Biomass Power Plant

ITOCHU Corporation (headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo; Masahiro Okafuji, President & CEO; hereinafter “ITOCHU”) announced today that Ichihara Biomass Power Co., Ltd., an operating company founded in September 2017 as a three-way joint venture of ITOCHU, Osaka Gas Co., Ltd. (headquartered in Chuo-ku, Osaka; ‎Takehiro Honjo, Representative Director & President; hereafter “Osaka Gas”), and Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (headquartered in Chuo-ku, Tokyo; Takao Tanaka, President, Representative Director; hereinafter “MES”), held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Ichihara Biomass Power Plant at the site of MES Chiba Works (Ichihara, Chiba Prefecture), where the plant is scheduled to be constructed.

It was a large ceremonial event attended by more than 100 guests, including the presidents of the three joint venture partners and representatives of the Development Bank of Japan and Chiba Bank, which will provide project financing.

This biomass power generation project will combine the construction and operations/maintenance capabilities of MES, biomass fuel supply fromITOCHU, and operational knowhow of power generation facilities ofOsaka Gas.We will aim for the stable business operation utilizing the strength of each company.

ITOCHU, Osaka Gas, and MES are continuing to actively promote operations using renewable energy, both domestically and internationally, in an effort to address global warming and contribute to the recycling-oriented society of the future.
