ITOCHU Announces New Exhibition at ITOCHU AOYAMA ART SQUARE "Bicycle Expo 2014 In Aoyama"

March 31, 2014

ITOCHU Corporation (headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo; Masahiro Okafuji, President & CEO; hereinafter “ITOCHU”), with the aim of developing future generations, contributing to society and promoting national and international art and culture as part of its social contribution operations, opened the ITOCHU AOYAMA ART SQUARE in October 2012 within CI Plaza, a commercial facility adjacent to ITOCHU’s Tokyo Headquarters, which has since hosted a number of exhibitions.

Here in Aoyama, Tokyo, which was declared by the Aoyama Shop Owners Association in 2009 to be a “bike-rider-friendly district” and is home to the Gaien ginkgo boulevard, which is perfect for cycling, along with over 20 bicycle-related shops, ITOCHU AOYAMA ART SQUARE will host “Bicycle Expo In Aoyama” again this year, enabling a variety of diverse bicycle designs to be enjoyed from a fine art perspective.

Last year’s exposition, with the theme “Time travel through the history of bicycles,” received acclaim for its numerous displays of rare and epoch-making models. This year’s theme is “Legend – the one bike to pass down,” and will primarily display the most-treasured models of bicycle fans while also exhibiting rare bicycles from around the world. The exposition hopes to contribute to the local community by enlivening the entire town of Aoyama with bicycle (sports) in the fresh, green, bicycle month of May.

Of particular note is the fact that the expo venue will feature valuable bikes that show the devotion and love of many famous people, including the late rock singer Kiyoshiro Imawano, actor Shingo Tsurumi, and the Minister of Justice and Chairman of the Japan Cycling Association Sadakazu Tanigaki. Also exhibiting a privately owned, coveted bike made by a legendary frame craftsman, and a section that introduces bicycle culture from around the world courtesy of the embassies of Italy, the Netherlands and Denmark, the expo offers a vast variety of displays, which we hope you will enjoy seeing together with the stories behind the models.
