ITOCHU Announces “Art of the Rough Diamonds” Exhibition, a New Project for ITOCHU AOYAMA ART SQUARE

March 10, 2017

ITOCHU Corporation (headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo; Masahiro Okafuji, President & CEO; hereinafter “ITOCHU”) opened ITOCHU AOYAMA ART SQUARE in CI Plaza, a commercial facility situated next to ITOCHU’s Tokyo Headquarters, in October 2012, aspiring to encourage the next generation, contribute to the community and promote art and culture in Japan and abroad as part of its social contribution activities. A number of exhibitions have since been held in the space.

The “Art of the Rough Diamonds” Exhibition is not a general exhibition for people with intellectual disabilities and mental illness. The exhibition is intended to display a significant array of their works that are worth appreciating as works of art, focus purely on their talents and introduce them as the individual creators. The exhibition is based on the idea of seeking evaluations of their artistic attributes from a wider range of people and providing them with the opportunity to enjoy the works.

Rotary Club of Tokyo Atago will select about sixty works, conduct display sales during the period of the event, and give back returns to both the welfare facilities to which the artists with disabilities belong and the individual creators themselves in the hope of providing an opportunity to give pride and tangible benefits to persons with disabilities. This year’s exhibition will be the second one after last year’s event, and ITOCHU anticipates selling all the exhibited works, just like at the last event.
