Coal Business in Australia and Indonesia

Cooperating with Switzerland-based Glencore plc and Australia-based Whitehaven Coal Ltd., ITOCHU promotes numerous coal development projects in Australia.

The Maules Creek coal mine ITOCHU is working on in conjunction with Whitehaven Coal in the state of New South Wales, Australia began production in January 2015. There are plans to expand mine production capacity from its current level of 8.5 million tons per year to 13 million tons, making it one of the largest coal mines in the state. Moreover, ITOCHU holds exclusive marketing rights for Japan and preferential marketing rights for other countries on coal produced at the mine, and is focusing on sales activities targeting Japanese and Asian customers such as power utilities and steel companies. Furthermore, production capacity is also being expanded at the Rolleston coal mine in the state of Queensland, Australia, which ITOCHU operates with Glencore, with the aim of further boosting its cost competitiveness.

In Indonesia, the PT Suprabari Mapanindo coal mine, located at the center of the Indonesian island of Kalimantan (Borneo), commenced shipments from the beginning of 2015 and is helping ITOCHU diversify its supply sources.
